Backplanes are the heart of any display, and thus their performance and reliability crucial. For AMOLED, several approaches to the backplane have been investigated by industry. The conventional path has been to use newer polysilicon TFT technology, while an alternative path has been to adopt more traditional amorphous silicon TFTs, which are dominant in the LCD industry.
Both approaches have their advantages, but both have their significant challenges too in terms of yield, reliability, scalability and cost.
